Genelec Monitors really transport you to Somewhere out of this World

I am an electronic music producer based out of Cape Town, South Africa. I've been producing music for a living now for 7 years. With my style of music, I often work with in excess of 150 channels of audio at times, with layers of percussion, layered instruments, and tons of fx sounds. Finding a balance and keeping a mix clean when working like this can be a difficult task and I needed a monitoring solution which allowed me to easily distinguish the sounds and mix them appropriately.

After checking out a few setups I soon settled on a pair of Genelec 8040A's. I originally started off in a bedroom studio with not too much space and no real acoustic treatment. When I first bought my Genelec 8040A's it was breeze setting them up. Because of a lack of space my monitoring position was pretty much up against the wall, which was not ideal, however the chart supplied with my monitors and the flip switches on the back made it easy to tune the bass response to the room.

Since then, after purchasing some property, I've relocated the studio to the new house, and a bigger room dedicated to the studio. Acoustically, I originally used an Auralex kit, which didn't really do the job of sorting out the bass response in the studio. The bass traps helped a little, although the foam panels were pretty useless for anything other than the high reflections. I solved the problem by purchasing some rock wool panels, covered with "sonic liner" fabric which I mounted inside a wooden frame and then put a picture frame over the top for aesthetics. I commissioned a joiner to build me a customized desk with rack enclosures with two raised sections on either side for the monitors.

With the Iso-Pod stands on the 8040A's I didn't have any need for some sort of shock mount for the speakers, they work great as is. The 8040A's now sound amazing, without calibrating them with the flip switches, in the new space, the bass response is so solid, great considering the nature of my work. I also love the crisp highs, the detail there was more defined than any of the other near field monitors I demoed when purchasing speakers.

The other thing that amazes me about the 8040A's is the depth you get in the stereo field. I often take regular breaks when working at night, turn off all the lights in the studio, close my eyes and just sit back and listen. It's different when monitoring without any visual distractions like LCD screens etc. and the Genelec 8040A's really transport you to somewhere out of this world when listening like this.

Happy 30th Anniversary Genelec!
