Take Good Care of my Ears (February Winner)
I still vividly remember the first time I heard Genelec monitors in a proper installation in a recording studio – it was a breathtaking experience. But, I am being too quick here. Let us go a few decades back in time into my childhood, when my father played an LP recod to me on his old compact record player – made by Iskra I believe, at that time pretty much the only alternative to hear R'n'R records in Yugoslavia. It was Pink Floyd's Dark side of the Moon LP, a recod that hipnotises me every time I hear it, even today.
I must have been around 4 or 5 years old, and I wanted to have my own record player with big (and I mean BIG) loudspeakers to go with, in my room. Well, after a few years, I managed to persuade my parents to buy me a small portable radio with cassette recorder. This was probably a turning point in my musical path.
At first, I discovered the joys of recording songs from radio shows late in the eveneings, but later I started to »produce« my own shows, using a cassette recorder, a built-in microphone and a second cassette player, borrowed from my best friend. We spent numerous hours in our basement, a studio we called it, and recorded our own private radio shows and radio plays. That was such fun!
This marked me for life. I worked as a DJ in a local club, and dreamed of my own radio station or at least a small recording studio. Years later, when I got to our capital city to study Electronics, I frequently listened to Radio Student, that held an audition for new radio technicians. I signed up immediately. The trainings were intense and they lasted for almost half a year, but out of 20 something candidates, only two were chosen. Luckily, I was one of them.
At those times Radio Student was situated in a basement of a student dorm, and the space was limited as were the funds that were available for studio technology, so we worked with what we had. At first I was allowed to work in a broadcast studio, and totally enjoyed every minute of it, knowing that after some time, when I got better, I will probably be invited to the recording studio that radio station used for production of shows, recording of the bands and commercial production.
A couple of years later, the radio got an offer to move to the new building, where we built three studios – one for broadcast, a big production/recording studio and a small one for montage purposes. After a year or so, we decided that we needed to replace our old monitors with something better. Genelec came on top of our list. We decided for 1038 for main monitors in the recording studio and 1030 for the broadcast studio.
What a difference that made! From the first time I heard the 1038's It was love at first sight, or should I say love at first tone that came from the 1038's drivers. Of course I had to play the Dark side of the moon immediately! The sound was so revealing, that everyone at the radio station heard the difference the Genelecs made, and the impact on our work was noticable from the begining.
I spent numerous nights in front of the beloved 1038's, recording bands, producing commercials, and mastering the recordings late in the night. On more than one ocasion I stayed in the studio till sunrise next morning, and I could still listen to the sound Genelecs were producing, without any fatigue or much effort. The sound was really revealing, soundstage was 3D-like, and neither of us experienced any fatigue.
All I can say is bravo Genelec for doing such a great job in producing world's best monitors, and for looking after our ears. My ears are very thankful to You!
