The Perfect Tools for Quality Production! (March Winner)
My name is Olly Brunton and I have been DJing house music for 10 years or so. When the first of my 3 children were born I decided that I would give up the late nights out DJing and instead start producing music so that I could keep up my music interests and maintain daytime family commitments.
To start with I did not place too much emphasis on the quality of my monitor speakers, using a small computer speaker and sub combination. At this time I also began my music label and sell music online. I often would listen to the music of my peers and wonder how they achieved such a rich and full sound, and not being one to consider equipment to be a major factor I continued to improve my skills to compensate.
Then one day I decided to visit a professional studio with my tracks to see for sure...what I learnt was phenomenal! Because of the honesty and quality of the Genelec studio monitors in the studio, I was able to hear my tracks properly and make the adjustments needed to achieve what I thought I could compensate with skill. I suddenly realised that If I was not hearing an honest representation of my tracks I could hardly make the appropriate changes to my music! This resonates with my acupuncture clinic, where diagnosis is so important to choosing the right treatment!
I immediately got myself 8030A monitors upon the recommendations from the Genelec dealers in New Zealand! Since then, I have made leaps and bounds in my production and mastering skills. The true turning point for my label and music came when I got the matching 7050B sub woofer. I was now able to add the subtle sub bass hooks to my tracks I had admired from leading Deep house artists! Almost instantly my music was well received and attracted a high caliber of artist seeking to associate with my label.
I have during this process believed that skill out ways equipment as a strategy. Though skill is always required, I know now that without the right equipment I would not have had a precise reference point to move forward from! Genelec has not only helped my production and music label, but as my studio is inside our waterside home, it is also the source of the family music. I waste no time getting home to enjoy quality sound of my Genelec system, the perfect tools for quality production & perfect compliment to our most beautiful setting!
