100% Portable Studio (April Winner)
Hi. My name is Matt. I write music and DJ under the Sleeveheads brand and I want to thank Genelec for giving me my creative freedom.
Up until 18 months ago my studio took up a lot of space and collaborating with others relied on them coming to see me.
Because I often find inspiration on holiday, or when I'm with other creative people, I started to consider how I could mobilise my studio. I knew that I wanted a laptop solution and to collaborate using speakers rather than by sharing headphones. After much research, I nervously auctioned my entire studio on eBay and went a different route.
My first encounter with Genelec monitors came when I was on holiday in Brighton. Genelec have a Reference Centre at the Guitar Amp and Keyboard Centre and I walked in off the street to find that I could demo the range of Genelec monitors immediately - They were set up ready to go and I could even A/B between different monitor pairs. The sales guy picked Chungking's "Voodoo" to play first. Wow! Just wow! Great imaging, power, transient dynamics and bass extension. I'd actually asked to hear the 8020Bs but thought I was cheekily being shown the 8030As or even 8040As. To my surprise and delight, I was hearing the 8020Bs. I had to have them.
Since buying the 8020Bs in January, they have proved invaluable. One of the truly liberating things about them is their physical design. Both the woofer and tweeter are protected by descreet metal grilles. This means that the 8020s can be slipped into their Genelec carry case without a moment's concern - the drivers aren't going to get damaged, ever. Nor will the enclosure because it's aluminium rather than plastic or MDF. I can be packed up and ready to go in under five minutes - the entire studio! I'd never be able to do that with other small monitors like KRKs or Adam or Focal because I'd worry that they'd get dented or damaged without their original packaging. Instead, Genelec's carry bag partners with the 8020s simply and brilliantly: two padded spaces for the speakers including their isolation pads and a pocket for two mains leads and two XLR cables. Done.
Today, my portable rig fits in just two bags: The Genelec carry bag for my monitors and cables and a Novation gig bag for my MacBook, Mackie Onyx Satellite and keyboard controller. I've taken a few snapshots so you can see what it's like.

Thank you Genelec!
