Searching for the Ultimate Sound
Being a Hi-Fi nut since I was 16 years old, I have always been searching for the ultimate "perfect" sound. I started way back in 1970 by importing JBL components and building S7 monitors. Dollar was weak so it fitted my budget then. The next step was experimenting with different amps, Dynaco, Quad and Phase Linear, trying to get the most out of the equipment.
Different versions of speakers flooded the listening room, IMF Transmission lines, Dynaco (Seas manufacturing) JBL L100´s, AR´s (almost every version, since I worked with AR´s spareparts in 1975). Most impressive was AR9´s but they needed many watts to get correct sound.
In 1995 I read an article in Studio Sound and got familiar with DCW and Genelec Engineering. The article was very well written and I was impressed. I ordered a pair of 1037A for test and tryout. They still are in my ownership. But, feeding them with a Yamaha CA1000 was not perfect. So, I bought a Focusrite 4 preamp. The only preamp I have seen that has same noise at full or closed volume gain. Balanced in/outputs was a hit reducing cable issues to zero.
The next step was room acoustics, and I chose a Klark Teknik DN360 to get the very best out of the room. Listening with the 1037A is at its best in triangular configuration, but my listening room is not optimal for that. The KT DN360 enhances the sound dramatically, giving the sound a very smooth curve. Room acoustics was measured with a sound pressure analyzer, so the 1037A ‘speaks’ in a linear way.
This is a strict 2 channel stereo setup. I have tried the 7071A subwoofer with this setup as well, but it did not add any specific sound since the material (CD) did not deliver much below 30 Hz.
